A popular treat that started in Spain, churros have gained popularity all over the world. We'll walk you through creating homemade churros in this recipe that are soft on the inside, crispy on the exterior, and completely delicious. We'll also offer advice on how to make sure your churros always come out perfectly!

Ingredients:
1 cup water
2 tablespoons granulated sugar
½ teaspoon salt
2 tablespoons unsalted butter
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 large egg
Vegetable oil (for frying)

For the coating:
½ cup granulated sugar
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Tools Required:
A medium-sized saucepan
Wooden spoon
Star-shaped piping bag (ideally ½ inch)
Knife or scissors
Pot or deep-frying pan
Optional thermometer for oil temperature
Paper towels
Bowls for mixing

Time Spent Preparation: 15 minutes
20 minutes is the cooking time.
35 minutes in total.

Directions:
Get the dough ready:
Put the butter, sugar, salt, and water in a medium pot.  Bring the mixture to a boil and melt the butter over medium heat.  Add the flour all at once and turn the heat down to low.  Using a wooden spoon, stir the mixture thoroughly until a smooth ball of dough emerges.  Take off the heat and allow it to cool for five minutes.

Add Egg and Vanilla:
Add the egg and vanilla essence to the dough when it has cooled a little.  Mix until all ingredients are combined and the dough is shiny and smooth.

Heat the Oil:
Preheat vegetable oil in a saucepan or deep fryer to 375°F (190°C).  To make sure the oil is at the proper temperature, use a thermometer.

Pipe the Churros:
Spoon the dough into a star-tipped piping bag.  Cut the dough at the end of each strip with scissors after carefully piping 4-6 inch strips of dough into the heated oil.  To prevent crowding, fry three to four churros at a time.

Fry Until Golden:
Cook the churros for two to three minutes on each side, or until they are crispy and golden brown.  Drain excess oil by placing them on paper towels after removing them from the oil with a slotted spoon.

Apply Cinnamon Sugar:
Combine the sugar and cinnamon in a small basin.  Roll the churros in the cinnamon-sugar mixture until completely coated, while they are still warm.

Serve and Savour:
Present your warm churros with dulce de leche, caramel, or chocolate sauce for dipping.

Last Tip:
Make sure your oil is at the proper temperature (375°F/190°C) for an extra crispy texture. The churros will brown too rapidly and stay doughy inside if the oil is too hot.  They will turn oily if it's too cold because they will absorb too much oil.  For accuracy, make use of a thermometer!
